MultiShield The new generation of prescription FL-41 lenses

Advanced Multi-Filter Protection for Digital Life and Bright Light

If you suffer from migraines, light sensitivity, or eye strain, standard glasses may not be enough. Modern lighting—from LED screens to bright sunlight—can overwhelm your eyes and trigger discomfort.

FL-41 prescription lenses are specially engineered to reduce these triggers using targeted light-filtering technology. The newest generation of FL-41 lenses combines multiple advanced filters into a single lens, delivering unmatched visual comfort whether you’re working on a computer, driving, or outdoors. Experience the Next Generation of FL-41 Lens Technology

Unlike traditional tinted lenses, today’s advanced FL-41 prescription lenses integrate four powerful optical technologies:

FL-41 Migraine Filter

The core of the lens is the clinically developed FL-41 spectral filter, designed to block specific blue-green wavelengths known to trigger migraines and photophobia.

Benefits include:

Vista-Mesh vs Honeycomb Lenses

When you’re choosing glasses for comfort and visual quality — beyond just correcting your prescription — manufacturers sometimes offer “specialised” lens technologies. Two types that are frequently discussed are .

What Are Vista-Mesh Lenses?

Vista-Mesh lenses are a specialist optical lens technology that incorporates a micro-mesh optical filter within the lens alongside contrast-enhancing elements. They are typically:

Light brown/orange-tinted, with approximately 80–90% light transmission, meaning they brighten certain environments while still complying with driving standards.
Made from a mid-index plastic material that’s thinner and lighter than standard CR-39 glass.
Designed to reduce glare and scattered reflections by aligning light more consistently before it reaches your eye.
Claimed to dampen flicker, sharpen contrast and reduce eye strain — particularly useful under fluorescent lighting, during night driving, or when working with screens.

Supporters of Vista-Mesh say: it can help with visual stress, headaches from harsh lights, night driving glare and similar symptoms — though results can vary widely between individuals.

In essence, Vista-Mesh tries to change how light is filtered and aligned overall — a combined approach of anti-glare coating plus an optical mesh that may influence contrast and visual comfort.

What Are Honeycomb Lenses?

Honeycomb lenses take inspiration from nature’s hexagonal honeycomb pattern. Instead of a mesh embedded in the material, these lenses have a special surface coating with a micro-honeycomb structure. The key points are:

This honeycomb pattern aims to filter light so that oblique and scattered rays are reduced, letting “perpendicular” light rays pass through more cleanly.
The effect is reduced glare and distortion, sharper clarity and less eye fatigue, especially in low light or artificial lighting.
They also usually include other common lens coatings — anti-reflective, scratch-resistant, hydrophobic — and UV protection.

Unlike Vista-Mesh, Honeycomb technology is primarily a coating innovation rather than a mesh filter inside the lens. It’s claimed optical benefit comes from how the hexagonal pattern influences light transmission and focus.

Vista Mesh

What are Vista Mesh lenses

Vista Mesh lenses are a type of advanced optical lens designed to improve visual comfort and clarity, especially in bright or high-glare environments. While the exact technology can vary by brand, “mesh” generally refers to a micro-structured or layered lens surface that manages how light enters the eye.

Product page

Here’s a clear breakdown of what they do: See what you are missing

How Vista Mesh Lenses Work

They use a fine micro-mesh or patterned filter embedded in or coated onto the lens.
This structure selectively controls light, reducing harsh reflections while allowing useful light through.
The result is a clearer, more comfortable vision without compromising the view’s brightness.

Key Benefits

Reduces glare: Cuts down reflections from sunlight, screens, water, or roads.
Enhances contrast: Helps objects appear sharper and more defined.
Improves clarity: Minimizes visual noise and eye strain.
More comfortable viewing: Especially useful for long hours outdoors or in front of digital screens.

Common Uses

Everyday eyewear for bright conditions
Driving glasses
Outdoor activities (walking, sports, commuting)
Work environments with strong lighting or screens

Compared to Regular Lenses

Unlike standard clear lenses, Vista Mesh lenses actively manage light rather than just letting it pass through.
Compared to polarised lenses, they may offer broader contrast enhancement while maintaining natural color balance.

Who They’re Good For

People sensitive to glare
Drivers and outdoor workers
Anyone wanting sharper vision and reduced eye fatigue

What are FL-41 lenses | What do they do?

What are FL-41 lenses | What do they do? Mike Dixon Of UK Eyewear Explains

Originally made in the 1990s, FL-41 lenses are tinted glasses designed to stop light sensitivity and cut down on headaches. UK Eyewear sells these special lenses to help people who suffer from bright lights, migraines, eye spasms, and head injuries. Academic studies—including work from the University of Birmingham—show that this special tint helps protect sensitive eyes.

How FL-41 Lenses Work

FL-41 uses a rose tint to block specific blue and green light rays (480–520 nm) that normally trigger headaches. Research from Birmingham University proves that these specific rays stimulate eye paths linked to pain.

Because of this, UK Eyewear builds its lenses to match proven research by offering:

Targeted blocking around 480–520 nm to catch the exact harmful light
Clear vision in red, yellow, and green so you can see normally
Many styles, including standard glasses, clip-ons, and wraparound frames for office workers or outdoor use

University Research Highlights

Studies from the University of Birmingham point out a few key facts:

Eye cells: Special cells in the back of the eye react strongly to blue light and cause pain.
Brain relief: Filtering out light between 480 and 500 nm calms down the pain centers in the brain.
Fewer headaches: FL-41 glasses greatly lower how often migraines happen for both kids and adults.

UK Eyewear Choices

UK Eyewear offers these lenses in several daily styles:

Indoor glasses: Lightly tinted for screen work and office tasks
Dark wraparound glasses: Built for bright outdoor days or severe light issues
Prescription lenses: Made to fit your regular frames using tough safety plastics

They also add anti-glare coatings, exact tint controls, and lightweight frames to keep you comfortable all day.

Common Uses

Doctors often suggest FL-41 lenses for:

Migraines and bad headaches
Head injuries and concussions
Eye spasms, severe light pain, and visual snow

Conclusion

Ultimately, UK Eyewear’s FL-41 range gives you a safe way to deal with bright lights and bad headaches. By blocking the exact light rays that cause pain, these glasses offer real relief when other treatments fail.

What is Dry Eye?

Dry Eye Syndrome: Overview, Symptoms, Risk Factors, and Treatment

Dry eye syndrome—also known as dry eye disease or simply dry eye—is a common condition that occurs when the eyes either do not produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. Tears are essential for keeping the surface of the eye healthy and ensuring clear vision. An imbalance in the tear film can lead to discomfort and visual disturbances.

Common Symptoms of Dry Eye:

A burning or stinging sensation in the eyes
Redness or itchiness
Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
Blurred vision
The sensation of having something in the eye (foreign body feeling)
Eye fatigue or discomfort, particularly after reading, screen use, or exposure to dry or windy environments

Risk Factors:

Aging – tear production tends to decrease with age
Gender – women are more affected, often due to hormonal changes (e.g., menopause)
Medical conditions – such as autoimmune diseases (e.g., Sjögren’s syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis)
Environmental conditions – dry climate, wind, smoke, air conditioning
Medications – including antihistamines, antidepressants, decongestants, and some blood pressure drugs

Treatment Options:

Treatment depends on the severity and underlying cause, and may include:

Artificial tears or lubricating eye drops to relieve symptoms
Prescription medications, such as anti-inflammatory eye drops (e.g., cyclosporine or lifitegrast)
Lifestyle adjustments, like using a humidifier, wearing wraparound glasses outdoors, or taking breaks from screens
Nutritional supplements, such as omega-3 fatty acids
Medical procedures, including punctal plugs (to block tear drainage), thermal pulsation therapy, or intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment to improve oil gland function

It’s important for anyone experiencing symptoms of dry eye to consult an eye care professional for an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan.

Therapeutic Lens Tints

Did you know you can get different colours of lens tints to help with medical conditions?

Understanding Medical Lens Tints: A Clearer View for Ocular Health

In this article, we’re diving into the world of medical lens tints—custom-tinted lenses fitted into glasses that can significantly improve daily life for individuals living with certain ocular or neurological conditions. These lenses are more than just a fashion accessory; they serve a specific purpose rooted in science and visual perception.

Most of us have probably experienced the shift in perception that comes from putting on a special pair of glasses. Take polarised lenses, for example—they cut through glare, allowing you to see beneath the surface of reflective water. Or think of 3D glasses at the cinema, where images seem to leap off the screen and into the room. These visual transformations feel almost magical.

But here’s the truth: there’s no magic involved.

What you’re experiencing is the result of how your brain interprets visual information. Light enters the eye and is converted into electrical signals that travel along the optic nerve to the visual cortex in the brain. There, those signals are decoded into the images we perceive. When that process is disrupted—whether by neurological conditions like migraines, photosensitivity, or visual stress—our experience of the world can be uncomfortable or even debilitating.

This is where medical lens tints come in.

Take the FL-41 tint, for example. This specially developed rose-colored tint has been shown to provide significant relief for individuals who suffer from migraines, light sensitivity, or even benign essential blepharospasm (involuntary eyelid twitching). By filtering out specific wavelengths of light—particularly those in the blue-green spectrum—the lens reduces visual noise and harsh glare. This, in turn, calms the brain’s response to visual stimuli.

The result? Fewer migraine attacks, reduced eye strain, and in some cases, a complete halt of symptoms.

The beauty of these lenses is that they are customizable. Tints can be tailored to the individual’s needs, whether they’re dealing with conditions like photophobia, concussion-related vision issues, Irlen Syndrome, or visual snow. Eye care professionals work with patients to determine the right shade and density of tint, optimizing visual comfort and function.

In short, medical tints are not about changing what we see, but how we see it—and how our brain processes that information. By reducing the intensity of certain light frequencies, these lenses create a more comfortable visual environment, helping people go about their daily lives with greater ease and less discomfort.

So while it may feel like magic when symptoms lessen or vanish entirely after donning a pair of tinted lenses, it’s really the power of science—and a better understanding of how our eyes and brain work together to make sense of the world.

FL-41 lenses fitted to my own glasses

At Uk Eyewear we now offer a service of fitting FL-41 lenses to customers’ frames.

The idea for this service came directly from one of our customers, who asked whether we could fit FL-41 lenses into their own frames. It made perfect sense — most people are very particular about the style and fit of the glasses they wear.

While we offer a wide selection of ready-to-wear frames on our website — including designer, sport, work, and high-performance options — we know we can’t possibly cater to every individual taste. So, thanks to Matthew (who you can meet in the video below), we’re pleased to say this service is now available.

We can glaze our specialist FL-41 tint into almost any optical frame. Lenses can be supplied non-prescription or made to your prescription, including single vision, varifocal, and bifocal options.

If you have specific requirements, please get in touch — we’re always happy to offer advice and see how we can help. Matthew’s first-hand feedback, along with insights from other migraine sufferers, has been invaluable in shaping what we do. If you have ideas or suggestions, we’d love to hear from you.

Photophobia Glasses for Light Sensitivity

Photophobia Glasses with FL-41 filter

Are you sensitive to light?

Do you suffer with:

Migraine headaches
Blepharospasm
Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)
Sensitivity to fluorescent lighting
Motion sickness
Nighttime driving discomfort

People who suffer from Photophobia (sensitivity to light) can get relief wearing the right frame and lens combination. Simply blocking more light by using darker and darker lenses isn’t the answer. It can actually make your vision worst as light levels get less so does the quality of your vision.

Research back in the 1990s by Birmingham University found that by using certain filters in glasses they could dramatically reduce the risk of triggering patients migraine headaches, blepharospasm, light-triggered seizures and CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome). After extensive testing, the filter used was given the code FL-41. The filter works by blocking certain colours in the colour spectrum. We use to same the same filter as used in the research.

The frame also plays an important role, we prefer to use wrap-around design frames that follow the contour of your head. The frames we use have thick side arms to ensure no light can pass through the side of the frame. The lenses have both UVA & UVB filters, colour FL-41

When treating any medical condition we would always recommend you seek the advice of your eye doctor (ophthalmologist) or GP before you make a purchase.
