What Is Dry Eye?
If your eyes often feel gritty, sandy, irritated, or burn as the day goes on, you could be one of the millions affected by Dry Eye Syndrome. This common condition becomes more prevalent with age and affects women two to three times more often than men. While many experience moderate to severe symptoms, experts estimate that far more people live with mild, undiagnosed cases.
The good news? Years of research have given us a much better understanding of the condition — and effective ways to manage it.
What Causes Dry Eye?
Dry eye occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears or when the tear film lacks the right balance of components to keep the eyes properly lubricated. A healthy tear film has three essential layers:
-
Outer oily (lipid) layer – made by the meibomian glands in the eyelids, it prevents tear evaporation.
-
Middle watery (aqueous) layer – produced by the lacrimal gland, it helps wash away debris and provides hydration.
-
Inner mucus layer – secreted by goblet cells in the conjunctiva, it allows tears to stick to the eye surface effectively.
Disruption in any of these layers can lead to dry eye symptoms, particularly when combined with environmental or lifestyle factors.
Why Are Tears So Important?
The surface of your eye is delicate and lacks its own blood supply. Instead, it relies on tears to deliver oxygen, nutrients, and electrolytes. When tear production decreases or evaporation increases, the eyes become dry and uncomfortable — a sensation that typically worsens throughout the day.
Common Symptoms of Dry Eye
Dry eye can present differently in each person, but typical symptoms include:
-
A feeling of dryness
-
Itching or scratchiness
-
Burning or stinging sensations
-
Sensation of a foreign body in the eye
-
Grittiness
-
Tired or heavy eyes
-
Frequent blinking or forced blinking
-
Sensitivity to light
Common Causes and Contributing Factors
Several factors can contribute to or worsen dry eye symptoms, including:
-
Dry environments – central heating, air conditioning, and windy conditions can increase tear evaporation.
-
Contact lens use – reduces natural blinking and may aggravate dry eye symptoms.
-
Screen time – prolonged use of screens or watching TV reduces blink rate, leading to dryness.
-
Aging – tear production tends to decline after the age of 45.
-
Hormonal changes – particularly around menopause, women may become more susceptible to dry eyes.
-
Medications – certain drugs, including hormonal treatments like birth control pills or HRT, can reduce eye moisture.
-
Poor diet – deficiencies in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals can impact tear production.
-
Post-surgical effects – facial, eye, ear, or brain surgery can temporarily affect blinking and tear film stability.
Whether you’re dealing with mild irritation or more persistent dry eye symptoms, our range of specialised eyewear at UK Eyewear can help provide relief and support better eye health.
