Did you know you can get different colours of lens tints to help with medical conditions?
In this article, we are going to be taking a look at medical lens tints. A custom made tinted lens fitted into a pair of glasses that may help improve your day to day life, whilst living with an ocular medical condition. I think most of us have experienced putting on a pair of glasses that have dramatically change the way we view an image?
I mean a polarised lens for example that allows you to see past a reflective surface or a pair of 3D glasses at the cinema when an image on the screen reaches into the audience. So how does all this magic happen, well sorry to disappoint, there is no magic.
It’s the way the brain receives the transmitted signals (image information) via the optic nerve. The image is sent to the visual cortex of the brain and is then converted into image impulses that make up the image we see. So people who suffer from conditions like migraines, for example, a condition that has been proved to benefit from the FL-41 tint. By removing the harshness of certain colours, the brain is more relaxed with the image it sees. The end result is less intense, less frequent, or even stopping the symptoms completely.
At Uk Eyewear we now offer a service of fitting FL-41 lenses to customers’ frames.
The idea came from one of our customers, who suggested it would be a good idea if we could fit FL-41 lenses into customer own frames. After all, people are very particular about the style of glasses they wear. We try to offer a range of off the shelf frames on our web site ranging for a designer, sport, work, and high-performance frames. The fact is we could never offer a big enough choice to suit all tastes. So thanks to Matthew, who you can meet below in the video we have now rolled out the service.
We can glaze the special FL-41 tint into all types of optical frames. We can make none prescription, or in your prescription with single vision, Vari-Focal, and Bi-Focal lenses. If you have any special requirement you can always contact us and we will be happy to try to help and advise. Matthew’s first-hand feedback and that of other migraine suffer’s has been invaluable. If you have an idea, we would love to hear from you.

Are you sensitive to light?
Do you suffer with:
- Migraine headaches
- Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)
- Sensitivity to fluorescent lighting
- Motion sickness
- Nighttime driving discomfort
People who suffer from Photophobia (sensitivity to light) can get relief wearing the right frame and lens combination. Simply blocking more light by using darker and darker lenses isn’t the answer. It can actually make your vision worst as light levels get less so does the quality of your vision.
Research back in the 1990s by Birmingham University found that by using certain filters in glasses they could dramatically reduce the risk of triggering patients migraine headaches, blepharospasm, light-triggered seizures and CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome). After extensive testing, the filter used was given the code FL-41. The filter works by blocking certain colours in the colour spectrum. We use to same the same filter as used in the research.
The frame also plays an important role, we prefer to use wrap-around design frames that follow the contour of your head. The frames we use have thick side arms to ensure no light can pass through the side of the frame. The lenses have both UVA & UVB filters, colour FL-41
When treating any medical condition we would always recommend you seek the advice of your eye doctor (ophthalmologist) or GP before you make a purchase.
