LCD Ski Goggles
At first glance, you would be forgiven for thinking this is a normal pair of ski goggles. But Uvex has really excelled themselves this time. Over the past few years, the company have come up with many different solutions on how to make a single ski goggle cope with changing light conditions. But every solution from ever ski goggle manufacturer has one major drawback, TIME. Photochromic lenses, goggles with interchangeable lenses, changing ski goggles, all takes TIME. We all know that up in the mountains the weather can change from fog to bright sunlight in seconds. Then, how about a ski goggle that reacts to changing light, in the blink of an eye.
Introducing the innovative Uvex Snowstrike Variotronic Ski Goggles. How it all works, the goggle has an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) lens much the same as a TV set. A small electronic pulse is used to energise the liquid crystals into providing 4 modes of colours and transparency. The reaction time is one-tenth of a second between clear, blue, red and violet. The display is powered by a tiny battery that is charged through a USB port. On a full the battery the goggle should last 50 hours between charges.
Two modes of operation; The Snowstrike Variotronic has 2 modes of operation manual and automatic. In manual mode, you simply press a button on the side of the goggles to select which filter you require. If you switch to automatic mode then a small photocell detects the ambient light levels and selects the appropriate colour and transparency required.
All the effort hasn’t just gone into the lens technology either, the frame is all new. The new frame is in a graphite or titanium matt colour that looks cool. Newly designed vents allow hot air to be exhausted and fresh air recirculated to keep the inner chamber fog free. The goggle is helmet compatible and has a silicone backed adjustable head strap.
All these features do come at a price, £335.00 to be precise. But if you love your skiing or snowboarding then what better way to spend your money than on the best vision you can possibly get. You can have the best skis or board in the world but if you can’t see were you are going it’s not going to end well. Prescription wear’s you are not ruled out either, an optical insert can be fitted to the inside of the goggle so you can enjoy all these state of the art features.
I always say buy the best eyewear you can afford and if this goggle is in your price bracket you won’t be disappointed.
